How the sizes are worked out
These are full-overlay fronts, which cover the front edges of the cabinet. They use the same rule as our kitchen unit calculator, so the two always match:
- One door: cabinet width minus the gap, by cabinet height minus the gap. A 600 × 720mm unit with a 3mm gap gets a 597 × 717mm door.
- A pair of doors: cabinet width minus two gaps, divided by two. A 1000mm unit gets two 497mm doors.
- Drawer fronts: the fronts and their gaps add up to the cabinet height, so they line up with a door next to them.
Going under a worktop? Many fitters use a slightly bigger gap so the doors clear it – a 5mm gap gives a 715mm door on a 720mm unit.
How many hinges?
We use the higher of two rules: by height (2 hinges up to 900mm, 3 up to 1600mm, 4 up to 2000mm, 5 up to 2400mm) and by weight, following Blum's guidance (2 hinges up to about 6kg, 3 up to 12kg). Doors over 600mm wide get one extra. The top and bottom hinges sit 100mm from the ends, with any others spaced evenly between. Always check your hinge maker's chart, especially for glass or heavy doors.
Common questions
What size door do I need for a 600mm cabinet?
For a full-overlay door with a 3mm gap, a 600mm wide, 720mm tall cabinet takes a 597 × 717mm door. Use a 5mm gap if you want a 715mm door under a worktop.
How many hinges does a door need?
Most kitchen doors up to 900mm tall need 2 hinges. Taller or heavier doors need more – a 2m tall wardrobe door usually needs 4. The calculator works it out from the size, board and thickness.
Where should hinges go?
Put the top and bottom hinges about 100mm from the ends of the door and space any others evenly between them. Make sure hinges don't clash with shelves inside the cabinet.
