Our recommendation

The boards at a glance

  • MFC (melamine-faced chipboard) comes ready-finished in hundreds of colours, woodgrains and stone effects. Once it's cut and edged it's ready to assemble – the workhorse for kitchen and wardrobe carcasses and shelving. Moisture-resistant versions are available.
  • MDF has a smooth, even core that cuts, routes and paints beautifully – ideal for painted doors, shaker profiles and CNC work. It's heavier, and needs pilot holes for screws in its edges.
  • Moisture-resistant MDF is the better choice for painted work in kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms.
  • Plywood is strong for its weight and holds screws well – the go-to for vans, workshops and heavy-duty shelving. Birch ply has an attractive layered edge. Use exterior or marine ply for wet or outdoor use.
  • High gloss and super matt boards such as Alvic Luxe and Senoplast give a premium finish for kitchen and wardrobe doors.

Common questions

What board is best for kitchen cabinets?

18mm MFC is the standard choice for kitchen carcasses – it's ready-finished, stable and good value. Use a moisture-resistant version for sink units, and MDF or a high-gloss board if you want painted or glossy doors.

Is MDF or MFC better for wardrobes?

MFC, unless you plan to paint. It comes ready-finished in hundreds of decors, so once it's cut and edged there's nothing else to do. Choose MDF if you want a painted finish.

What is the best board for a van conversion?

Plywood. It's light for its strength, holds screws well and copes with vibration. Use exterior or marine grade anywhere it might get wet.

Can MFC be used in a bathroom?

Yes – choose a moisture-resistant MFC and make sure every edge is sealed with edging. For painted bathroom furniture, use moisture-resistant MDF.
