A quick reference to the standard sheet sizes and thicknesses of MFC, MDF and plywood in the UK – and what they mean when you are planning a cutting list. Sizes are in millimetres, length × width.

Common board thicknesses

How heavy is a sheet?

Worth knowing before you carry boards up stairs or load a van. Approximate weights for 18mm sheets:

MFC, 2800 × 2070mm	about 65–70 kg
MDF, 2440 × 1220mm	about 38–42 kg
Birch plywood, 2440 × 1220mm	about 35–38 kg

Cut-to-size panels are much easier to handle – one reason fitters have us cut and edge everything before it goes to site.

Planning your cutting list around sheet sizes

Allow for trimming and the saw blade. The factory edges are trimmed square and every cut removes a few millimetres, so you cannot get two 1035mm parts out of a 2070mm-wide sheet.
Woodgrain decors have a direction. On most woodgrain MFC the grain runs along the 2800mm length, so long parts with the grain running lengthways fit best that way.
Mix part sizes. Narrow strips such as plinths and fillers fit into the offcuts left by large panels, cutting waste.

What size is a standard sheet of MDF in the UK?

2440 × 1220mm (8ft × 4ft), with 3050 × 1220mm (10ft × 4ft) also common.

What size is a sheet of Egger MFC?

Most Egger decorative chipboard comes in 2800 × 2070mm sheets.

Can you cut a full sheet down so it fits in my car?

Yes – give us the sizes you need, or ask us to cut the sheet into manageable pieces. We can also deliver in our own vans within around 35 miles of Peterborough.
